258. Even in Poverty, She Learned Her Life Has Purpose and Happiness
Tula Coomes
At age 15, she returned home from boarding school in the United Kingdom to Zimbabwe, Africa, to discover that her grandmother–the woman who was her mother, her father, who was everything to her–did not even know who Tula was.
Tula Coomes is a freedom-loving, passionate woman on a mission to transform lives. Born into poverty in the southern African nation of Zimbabwe, she was raised by her grandparents. Her grandmother once told her, “You’re not in this world by accident. You need to find what your life purpose is, and when you find this, your true happiness begins. Only then can you start to control your own destiny.” Tula struggled with low self-esteem and confidence. After one too many depressed days, she decided to do something about it. She developed a letting-go process which she used to transform her own life. She now uses it to work with individuals, helping them through their own barriers, enabling them to let go of anything holding them back, and to gain confidence, energy and clarity to pursue their path.
How Did You Start Using Your Talents?
“After I migrated to the U.K. and went to school, that’s when I began studying nursing as a career. I trained as a mental health nurse, and have worked as a mental health nurse for 16 years. I earned a degree, upgrading my skills, learning neurolinguistics programming (NLP) as well, an amazing tool I wish I could have found when I was very young.”
The Most Impactful Turning Point?
With family assistance, Tula enrolled in boarding school in the United Kingdom in her teens. On a trip home to visit the woman who raised her in Zimbabwe, she discovered her grandmother’s forgetfulness was severe dementia. “She only could remember that I was the girl that used to live with her.” “That was a major turning point in my life. The person I had known as my mother, my father — the woman who was absolutely everything to me — couldn’t even remember me! That’s when I knew I had to do something about my life. I was about 15, and I didn’t have anyone else that I could look up to. So I decided I had to do something, that something needed to change.”
The Most Powerful Lessons Learned?
“After years of helping others as a mental health nurse, I began to understand what my grandmother had taught me when I was young about finding your purpose. About two years ago, I realized I had more to give to the world than I was doing at that time. Now, I am enjoying doing what I love, but I am growing, developing and evolving. I am even more passionate about my work with individuals, because I am actually discovering myself even more. I’m realizing what’s out there in the universe, and how the universe is so kind. That keeps me inspired, enjoying what I do.”
