65. Expert Interview: Development through Coaching
Tom Tavantzis, EdD
Tom Tavantzis, Ed.D., has engaged his passion for understanding people and helping them develop their strengths throughout his 35 year career as one of the industry’s top leadership psychologists and career development experts. He is often described by his workshop participants and graduate students as a transformational leader and teacher.
Development Through Coaching
Corporate cutbacks in middle-management came at the cost of developing people for success, especially in crucial areas such as emotional intelligence, deep listening and problem-solving not exclusively focused on the bottom line. Managers may be technically superb but sorely deficient in the people skills that enable individuals to work as a team.
Why Is This Important?
Coaching managers to “be in the here and now” and really listen is vital for understanding problems,” Tavantzis explains. “When people talk about situations, they’re also making comments about the relationship that exists between you and them.” Helping people through their relationships helps a manager deal with the team in a different way.
What Are the Key Lessons Learned Here?
People can be taught to identify and work with their strengths, Dr. Tavantzis asserts. “I believe deeply in the power within each of us to harness our natural abilities as well as develop our own career and life vision so that we can live lives that are satisfying to ourselves and others.”
