266. Career and Personal Success Spring from Practicing Mindfulness
Tamara Dorris
Her confidence was high after healing herself even though doctors told her nothing could be done. She took the lessons she had learned in self-healing and prepared to apply them to selling houses. Then, the real estate market crashed, ushering in the worst economy since the Great Depression.
Tamara Lee Dorris has been a life-long fan of personal and spiritual development and has written several books that fall under the category of “self-help.” Her recent book “Mind Over Market” is a best seller. Tamara is also an adjunct professor, radio host, and longtime real estate professional who says she has “gone crazy selling houses, loves yoga, and is still as addicted as ever to personal and spiritual development.” She lives in northern California with too many animals and her husband. She has four kids that also keep her busy.
How Did You Start Using Your Talents?
Using principles she had taught herself about neuroscience and quantum physics, Tamara left her lengthy hospitalization and illness behind her. “I thought, if I can heal my body with my mind and beliefs, there’s no way I won’t be able to overcome my fear of making a cold call to a prospective client.” She renewed her real estate license and set out, as the saying goes, “to put your money where your mouth is.” Then came the real estate crash. Although it was tempting to change her course, she said, “No. This is the best environment to apply what I know because now it will be a true test.” Soon, working part-time while also teaching, she was making two to three times what average full time agents were making, “just by using the techniques I had developed, and by really focusing on being mindful, doing my visualizations, doing all the things that I teach agents now.”
The Most Impactful Turning Point?
“In the early ’90s, I found myself unexpectedly divorced, living on food stamps, with my two little girls. I was so depressed and I couldn’t pull myself out of it. So I began reading. I was going to garage sales for books because I didn’t even have a library card or any money, and there was no amazon.com back then, so I just began to study and to learn how to use my mind in ways that changed my beliefs, using principles from neuroscience and quantum physics. As a result, I went from barely having a high school education, living on food stamps, to becoming a college professor.”
The Most Powerful Lessons Learned?
“Ultimately, I teach mindfulness. It starts with some type of a meditative practice. We can’t control things outside of our lives in our favor unless we are in control of what’s going on inside our own head. It’s all about your mindset, belief system and all these things that precede your action.”
