257. A Navy Life Teaches Sailor About Gratitude, Leadership and Authority
T. Allen Hanes
For most of his adult life T. Allen Hanes had excelled in the U.S. Navy, becoming an accomplished photographer, circling the globe, training new recruits. It wasn’t until 1998, as he faced civilian life, that he truly learned “about dropping off into a big blue ocean.”
T. Allen Hanes is the CEO of T. Allen Hanes and Associates. A retired U.S. Navy photographer and video producer and bestselling author, he loves teaching entrepreneurs across the globe how they can awaken and claim their authority through publishing and media. He’s been featured on CNN, CBS, NBC, Fox and ABC. Tracy has a passion for helping entrepreneurs, business owners, authors, speakers and coaches position themselves as the go-to person in their niche. He and his teams have created over 600 bestselling authors to date.
How Did You Start Using Your Talents?
Tracy recalls his mother suggesting he was insightful and perceptive, and that he should follow his instincts to break out of situations and cycles that might hold him back. As he was learning about leadership and the feel of victory in high school athletics—football, wrestling, basketball and golf—he was also becoming aware of an underlying unhappiness in his home. He sensed that he needed to break away for his own growth.
The Most Impactful Turning Point?
Leaving his Navy career in 1998—where he’d become an accomplished photographer, and later a trainer of new recruits—was a major turning point for Tracy. Having spent most of his adult life in the structure of the military, he was unfamiliar with civilian life and the corporate world. He quickly learned to teach himself the skills he needed to weather the ups and downs.
The Most Powerful Lessons Learned?
“Gratitude is the key. The truth is, wherever you are in life—regardless of how bad it is—you have to be grateful for it. Accept it, and show gratitude for where you are and what you’re doing. I mean, be grateful that you’re putting one foot in front of the other, grateful that you’re putting a sock on, grateful that you’re brushing your teeth. It doesn’t matter what you’re doing, show gratitude.”
Steps to Success from T. Allen Hanes
1. Gratitude is the key. Whatever your situation, show gratitude.
2. Learn to rely on your interior instead of what you’re seeing with your eyes, and what you think is happening.
3. Break out of the traditional ways—what the school systems and colleges teach. Take responsibility for your own self-education.
4. Develop a don’t-give-up attitude. The only way you can lose is if you quit.
