226. Supermodel / Therapist Teaches Beauty from the Inside
Susan Miner
Susan Miner, M.A., went from posing as a model to serving as a psychology professor and counselor. As an international supermodel, Susan represented such powerhouses as Vogue, Elle, Revlon and L’Oreal. As president of Beauty from the Inside Out, Susan is a workshop facilitator and counselor. Her expertise as a supermodel and therapist merged into one passion: To raise your inner peace and beauty. Susan’s unique approach combines energy healing and traditional psychological techniques.
How Did You Start Using Your Talents?
“I was in a swim school when I was 11 or 12 years old. There were several girls who said to me, ‘Susan, you should be a model.’ I had never even thought of that! There was a modeling school near where I lived and I hounded and hounded my mother for about two months and she finally let me go. I started out doing mannequin modeling, then I passed out perfume, and graduated to doing some runway stuff. At one of those runway shows a company decided to make me their spokesperson, and I got a contract for a couple of years. That was really my start.”
The Most Impactful Turning Point?
The glamour of international flights and hotels—booked at the last minute because her clients worked that way—wore off as Susan approached her mid-20s. Her nerves were frayed and insomnia plagued her. “I felt like I couldn’t go on. That was a turning point. It was a defining moment. I decided to retire at 26. It was at the height of my modeling career.” It was the beginning of a long and winding path that led her through university, graduate school, a bit of wandering—almost to an ashram in India—and then to a healer in New York City.
The Most Powerful Lessons Learned?
“We do all have a purpose, and mine is to help people emotionally. I can do this no matter what I’m doing for a living. So, for example, I can unofficially help people emotionally even at a photo shoot – if I’m working as a model. I think we forget that a person’s purpose is a quality they possess, instead of a specific job or career. We forget that our purpose has to do with who we are as a person, a specific gift or quality we have that is a gift to other people around us.”
