Matthew Pollard’s childhood dyslexia diagnosis was wrong, but by the time that got straightened out, he was already in high school. He had to learn to read all over again. “I had a face full of acne, braces, and I was ridiculously introverted and shy. I was reading at a sixth-grade level. My only job option was as a commission-only door-to-door salesperson.“

How Did You Start Using Your Talents?
Finding himself suddenly unemployed in Australia’s lengthy summertime Christmas season, his only job option was selling door-to-door. His employer only taught him about its product, no sales training at all. He couldn’t afford sales seminars. Reading books was agony. “But I could teach myself HOW to sell on YouTube. That’s what I did. Every day I’d practice another step in the process. Every day I’d make a sale with fewer slammed doors between them, until eventually–we’re talking six or seven weeks later–I went from being terrified of selling to being the number one salesperson in the largest sales and marketing company in the southern hemisphere.”
The Most Impactful Turning Point?
“I was an introverted guy that had no reason to be in sales, outside of desperation, yet I succeeded because I was forced into it. I went looking and found the steps and milestones to the sales process, then I found videos on each of those elements, and I learned the process.”
The Most Powerful Lessons Learned?
“I realized that by understanding what I love doing, I make terrific money out of it, but I also have the ability to do what I love every single day. So what I always suggest to people is that they need to understand what their three primary personal drivers are and their three primary business goals. Then, ask themselves why it’s so personally important to them, and not to the other influences in their lives, from childhood, family or society.”
