How Did You Start Using Your Talents?
In his mid-teens, Kim knew he would do great things online. His passion for ornamental tropical fish led him to an online forum focused on the topic. Soon he was an admin of the forum, finding paying sponsors for the online group, then being approached by companies in the aquarium industry for help with their own online presence. Early on he saw the importance of immersing himself in his passion and learning everything about it that he could.
The Most Impactful Turning Point?
Business had always interested Kim and he studied business subjects at his “uni” in Australia. Working at several traditional brick and mortar businesses, he saw that his all-in way of working was wrapping up his job duties in record time. So, he began using his time to learn everything he could about the online world and social media. A turning point came one Christmas. Hoping to spend a few days with his family, his employer told him company policy only allowed state holidays off. He started planning and strategizing to go out on his own and be his own boss.
The Most Powerful Lessons Learned?
“If fear is holding you back from following your passion, ask yourself, ‘What’s the worst that can happen?’ Even if you fail, you still can survive. You’ll be able to do something to bring yourself back. Choose something. See what you like. Do it on the side. As Gary Vaynerchuk says, there is plenty of time to hustle and build a business between 7 p.m. and 2 a.m. Turn off the TV, start playing with things you like, see what you enjoy. Once you find it, make the committed decision to actually DO it.”
