224. Passion with Purpose Is Music to His Ears

Born in the UK to Indian parents, who were born in Kenya, Kavit was exposed to a diverse range of cultures and musical styles. A musician at heart, he learned how to play the tabla, one of the most difficult percussion instruments in Indian music. He envisioned a fusion of his tabla with other musical styles. Kavit was successful at getting gigs, but he noticed many musician friends were not. A mentor told him musicians don’t get gigs because they don’t want to do marketing. So, Kavit learned about the online world and started helping fellow musicians market themselves online.

As he helped musician friends find their way to the forums on MySpace in its heyday, Kavit realized, “I was spending a shockingly huge amount of time sitting down and explaining these things individually.” There had to be a better way, he thought, “so I decided to write my first little guide on how to promote your music online. I called it The 49 Ways to Promote Your Music on the Internet.” Soon after that he created online forums, a membership site, and continued to write and sell guides online.

“What I think is fascinating is that all of this requires a leap of faith. You have to have faith that you can jump over the little bit of fear that’s holding you back from achieving something. That’s the first thing. Of course, everybody’s situation is different. But I believe it’s possible for everybody to turn themselves around and do that. At the end of the day, we all have to believe in ourselves.”
