56. Drawing Career Wisdom from Personal Experience

How Did You Start Using Your Talents?
Six years into a successful advertising and marketing career, Kalpana woke up one day burnt out from the stress of the job. Recognizing something had to change, she took stock of what gave her joy. Disciplined self-examination and study led her through “a creative process,” not a straight line. Undeterred, she zig-zagged into her chosen profession.
The Most Impactful Turning Point?
There were two: at age 29 deciding to leave advertising, and in her 40s deciding to go back to school. Both involved listening to her heart instead of exclusively her brain. “That shift was a real struggle,” she recalls.
The Most Powerful Lessons Learned?
“Too many people get into a mindset that says, ‘I’m too old to make a radical change.’ I believe you have a psychological imperative to grow, and that your soul is going to push you to keep redefining yourself. It’s a choice between growth and comfortable, stable misery.”
