201. Learning from Her Own Pain, She Helps Stepfamilies Cope
Judy Graybill
Judy Graybill helps stressed-out stepfamilies to argue less and relax more. As a certified stepfamily coach, speaker, educator, and writer, Judy falls into the 70% of step-couples who split up. Her pain and the heartache of still being in love when her relationship ended propelled her to find answers. Through books, interviews, classes, and spiritual development, she complemented her formal degrees in sociology and psychology. Her clients praise her for giving them “peace of mind,” “empowerment,” and “real world solutions.”
How Did You Start Using Your Talents?
Growing up in a dysfunctional family, Judy questioned the ways her mother told her to cope. “My family of origin definitely impacted me. My parents divorced when I was eight. And I had a very unhealthy view of marriage, which propelled me to learn how to have a healthy relationship, and it propelled my desire to help other people do the same.”
The Most Impactful Turning Point?
Her own family experiences—coupled with empathizing with a promising schoolmate whose options she felt were limited by his own dysfunctional situation—led her toward her career choice as early as high school. She studied psychology, sociology and juvenile justice, guided by her desire to use her own pain to help others.
The Most Powerful Lessons Learned?
“Every painful experience we have is meant to teach us something or help us teach other people something. I connected with that, and believed that it was meant for me to help other people. It also connected me with my original career purpose.”
