143. “Essential Mindfulness for Lawyers” Training Can Help Anyone
Judi Cohen
Judi Cohen is an attorney and law professor who founded Warrior One and its nationally-acclaimed Essential Mindfulness for Lawyers® trainings, which have helped thousands of lawyers, law students and conflict-resolution professionals integrate the crucial tool of mindfulness into their practices and lives, to reduce stress, increase effectiveness, and positively influence wellbeing and outcomes.
How Did You Start Using Your Talents?
“Four years into practicing law, I started having some strange ailments that physicians couldn’t put their finger on, and was running into internal conflicts between my work and my values. Somebody told me about yoga. Using the book, Light on Yoga, I started doing yoga on my own in my 20s, and it really helped.”
The Most Impactful Turning Point?
In her late 40s, Judi went through a terrible divorce. “I had to walk away with whatever internal resources I had.” Her teacher told her, “You have to die to this. There is no way around the pain. Open your heart and mind and go through it.” From that experience, Warrior One was born.
The Most Powerful Lessons Learned?
Judi learned that the practice of mindfulness—as a practice of life—can be useful to anyone. Whether you’re a lawyer or working in social justice, or in conflict resolution, and are surrounded by conflict, the practice of mindfulness can allow you to open your heart and mind and get through it.
