271. HR Pro’s App Helps Parents Move from Overwhelmed to Empowered
Jillian Theorgood
Even as a little girl, Jillian Theorgood knew she loved helping people. But when she went to college, she decided to follow in her father’s footsteps and study information technology (I.T.). Unlike most people, she quickly realized she was heading for a career for which she had no passion. As she walked slowing to the guidance office, she began to rethink her future.
Jillian Theorgood is a new author of the book “Overwhelmed to Empowered.” Her passion for working with people guided her career in the human resources field for more than 20 years. She serves on the Darby, Pennsylvania, Borough Council and volunteered as a head track coach for nine years. Jillian has always championed the enrichment and empowerment of youth. She is confident that her book will encourage others to advocate, too.
How Did You Start Using Your Talents?
“When I was a little girl, I was always interested in people, even from the time when I was really young. I just wanted to know what people were thinking, if they were upset I wanted to know why. I just wanted to be involved, not to be nosy but to be a helpful person.” When Jillian went to college, she considered information technology (I.T.), following in her father’s footsteps, but quickly found it was not for her. Remembering her childhood, she followed her interests and found herself loving her work in human resources.
The Most Impactful Turning Point?
“The major turning point for me was when I gave birth to my middle son, who was born with a congenital heart disease. Suddenly I had to organize his care. He had nine ‘ologists’ at one point—so many different specialists—it was incredible! I had to do something so I would not be so stressed out. So, I created the DELMAR Log, which stands for Daily Efficient Log for Medical Appointment Recording. It’s for families who are trying, like I was, to manage the day-to-day care of their child, keep multiple appointments, fill out paperwork that seems to be asking for the same things over and over. I found that once you have everything in order and organized, it’s less stressful, you’re less angry, and your child sees less anger.”
The Most Powerful Lessons Learned?
“It’s so important to sit down early in life and try to determine what your true passion is. What is your calling? What makes you happy? Ask yourself, ‘If I could do anything in life, what would I do?’ That is the thing that you need to follow. See if you can go in that direction. If you’re happy and passionate, doing something that you love, it’s going to be beneficial to the people around you, too.”
