241. From Rock Bottom, She Helps Women Create Lives of Success
Jenn Scalia
Facing a mountain of debt, divorce, and single parenthood—with some depression thrown in for good measure—Jenn Scalia launched her business. With all these factors working against her, failure was a distinct possibility. Working for one of the largest casinos in Atlantic City, she also knew something about risk.
Jenn Scalia is a visibility strategist for entrepreneurs who want to make an impact. This professed introvert and single mom went from rock bottom to creating a six-figure business. Known for her tough love, no-B.S. style, Jenn helps entrepreneurs overcome their biggest fears and empowers them to share their message with the world.
How Did You Start Using Your Talents?
“I was in college and we were always on social media, chatting and things like that, and I just loved it. When I started working in corporate around 2008, doing a lot of marketing, it was my idea to bring in some social media in my work. When social media started to boom, it really sparked my interest. I’m very creative. I like to write, create things, I’m an artist. So I just felt a draw to marketing and social media.” She worked for six months doing marketing and social media at a large casino, but after being laid off twice in a three-year period, she was fed up with the corporate world.
The Most Impactful Turning Point?
When Jenn was laid off the second time from her casino job, she and her husband were both earning about the same. “Our household income got slashed in half. “At that point I just decided I didn’t want someone else to dictate how much money I would make, if I would get a paycheck, or if I would have a job. That’s when I went on this search to create my own thing.” Her father was an entrepreneur, so the idea of having her own business was not alien to her.
The Most Powerful Lessons Learned?
“I really do believe it is my experiences that have brought me to where I am today. Before I started my business I feel I was like a little girl, still kind of following what everybody else wanted me to do, what I was supposed to do. Now I truly feel like I’m a woman, I’m out there, I’m the creator of my life, and I know that whatever it is that I want, I can figure out how to get it.”
