Fred Brown
Brown’s Guides develops and publishes high-quality editorial content about a wide variety of where-to-go, what-to-do topics through multiple channels and platforms, explains publisher Fred Brown. “I have been involved with all aspects of print and online publishing, writing, editing, promotion and sales for over 35 years. It’s what I love to do.”
How Did You Start Using Your Talents?
Returning from military service, Fred was recruited by the editor of his college newspaper. Although he’d never considered journalism, editing the newspaper “convinced me journalism was my ‘calling’. I put that in quotes, because I’ve never been able to escape it. I’ve tried on numerous occasions, but always come back to it.”
The Most Impactful Turning Point?
Recognizing that even in his jobs that didn’t seem related to publishing, “I always found a way to maneuver myself around into a publishing and writing situation. After a point, people come to see that in you and just put you in that slot as they realize what you’re doing.”
The Most Powerful Lessons Learned?
“I could have jump-started my career 10 years with a resource like this podcast,” Fred observed. Often in his career, colleagues have seen and acknowledged his talents even before he did. It can be so helpful, to have counseling or coaching to find out what you think you might be good at.
Top Tools on His Browser
“I think I’m committed to the internet as my medium for the duration. I love social media, especially Twitter and Facebook, and I communicate with a lot of people on them. WordPress is such a marvelous medium. You can do almost anything you want on WordPress, with a developer or on your own.”
