How Did You Start Using Your Talents?
“My mother started doing videos for the local Chamber of Commerce. I was twelve years old. I carried equipment and learned how to set up lights. I fell in love with it. Right off the bat, I started working on more projects with her. I learned about sound, and about camera operating. At sixteen I was doing some work for the local A.B.C. affiliate as well. I knew exactly why I was on this planet and I had a laser sharp focus.”
The Most Impactful Turning Point?
“In the late eighties there were few video production classes in schools. So I created a documentary on why my high school needed one. With the support of my English teacher, I presented it to the Panasonic Corporation and was so bold as to ask for their help with some equipment. They gave us an entire post-production suite, cameras, tripods, editing equipment, and lights. We then went to the school board to pitch our idea for a video production class. They agreed. This experience taught me volumes about the power of a good idea, strategy and teamwork.”
The Most Impactful Turning Point?
“You have to be adept at finding the right people to help you accomplish your goals. And with filmmaking and television production that is certainly the case. You may be the best director—Orson Welles or Steven Spielberg—but even those people are nothing without the people that they’re surrounded with. I have been fortunate in my life to have had some tremendous opportunities, but also be surrounded with some very supportive and knowledgeable people.”
