147. Joe Volunteer—An App to Boost Volunteers Ten-Fold
Chip Franks
Chip Franks is the founder of The Real Estate MarketPlace, with 16 realtors and a property management company in Harker Heights, TX. His passion project, Joe Volunteer, is an Uber-like mobile app that connects organizations and volunteers on demand. The goal: increase volunteering 10-fold globally and help millions of people worldwide.
How Did You Start Using Your Talents?
As a boy, Chip got into trouble selling old calendars door to door. In sixth grade, he discovered he could make nunchucks (“chainsticks”) fairly quickly for $2.00 each and sell them for $6.00. Ever popular with young boys, the traditional Okinawan martial arts weapon sold very well, for awhile.
The Most Impactful Turning Point?
Chip did well in marketing classes in college, but his learning soared when he got into the real world. “Curiosity and wanting to see things work” are traits he credits for recently reaching his 20th anniversary of being self-employed and in real estate, traits he uses in the creation of Joe Volunteer.
The Most Powerful Lessons Learned?
“A formal education can make you a living, but a self-education will make you a fortune. What’s great about business is that the act of creating something is fantastic. It is a mirror, good or bad, of the skills and talents that you bring to the table.”
